Monash Health doctors achieve record pass rate in RACP exams

Monash University MBBS graduates have once more achieved a record pass rate in their recent Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) clinical exam at Monash Health.

Although a smaller cohort sat the exam this year, the pass rate again exceeded the national average, with 18 of the 23 doctors in the Monash Health class achieving success.

“We are very proud of the result,” said Dr Henry Ma, Director of Physician Education at Monash Medical Centre.

“This year we had an even more intense preparation program including individual communication workshops, subspecialty programs in neurology, cardiology and rheumatology as well as mock exams.”

Centrally scheduled long case presentations, long and short case tutorials and lectures and the exam mentorship program also contributed to the success rate.

“The competition for advanced training after the exam is so intense that we also provided our candidates with career development support in interview skills and resume writing assistance,” added Dr Ma.

“We want to ensure our Monash Health candidates have the best possible chance at success in future job applications.”
The strong teaching culture at Monash Health is led by Professor Peter Ebeling, Head, Department of Medicine at the School of Clinical Sciences and Chair, Division of Medicine at Monash Health.
“Monash Health is the largest health network in Victoria and we have many more advanced training opportunities in a wide range of subspecialities than other networks,” said Professor Ebeling.  "We also have more physicians on the RACP National Examiner Panel than any other health network in Victoria, so this adds to the quality of basic physician training here."

Doctors who successfully pass the RACP exams may progress into a medical subspecialty of their choice.

“Passing this exam is such a joy and relief and opens up so many opportunities for future training,” said successful candidate Dr Megan Brown.
“Our training at Monash Health has been fantastic,” added Dr Brown. “The program was really well organised and we are so blessed to have had incredible support from the consultants at Monash Health who gave up countless hours to teach us.”

There are now seven consultants at Monash Health on the RACP National Examiner Panel and Monash University’s Professor Michelle Leech is the Chair of the RACP clinical exam committee.
