Congratulations to Dr Lisa Walter for obtaining an Australian and New Zealand Children’s Haematology/Oncology Group (ANZCHOG) funding

Dr Lisa Walter has been awarded funding to organize an Australian and New Zealand Children’s Haematology/Oncology Group (ANZCHOG) Concept Development Workshop for her study on sleep in children with cancer.  Her project "Bright light therapy to improve sleep, reduce fatigue and improve the quality of life in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia during maintenance treatment" will be the focus of a workshop which will provide an opportunity for interstate collaborators to meet, discuss and develop the concept, commence project planning/protocol development and establish roles and responsibilities.

Lisa was also successful in obtaining a travel grant to attend the  ANZCHOG conference next June in Cairns to present the preliminary findings of her study.

Congratulations to Dr Sarah Biggs and Prof Rosemary Horne for obtaining Creswick Foundation funding

Dr Sarah Biggs
Prof Rosemary Horne
Dr Sarah Biggs and Prof Rosemary Horne were successful in obtaining funding from the Creswick Foundation to bring A/Prof Hawley Montgomery-Downs to Australia in 2016. A/Prof Montgomery-Downs from the West Virginia University is an internationally recognised expert in paediatric sleep and will present a number of workshops and lectures within the Ritchie Centre, to health professionals, teachers and also at the 2016 PSANZ conference on infant and child sleep issues including the effects on maternal and family health.

Congratulations A/Prof Gillian Nixon and Prof Rosemary Horne for obtaining Jack Brockhoff Foundation funding

A/Prof Gillian Nixon and Prof Rosemary Horne were successful in obtaining funding of $30,000 for their project "Optimising daytime functioning in children with Down Syndrome through the early identification of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea" from the Jack Brockhoff Foundation.

Prof Rosemary Horne
A/Prof Gillian Nixon
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is extremely common in children with Down Syndrome, but the condition is not normally investigated or treated as part of clinical care.  OSA can have a significant impact on the learning, behaviour, cardiovascular system and quality of life of developing children, but its effects are yet to be studied in children with Down Syndrome.

Are you interested in taking on the challenge of a PhD?

The global relevance of basic anthropometric and food intake measures for nutrition screening in a rapidly industrialized society: from under to over nutrition in Chinese children

Email: helen.truby@monash.edu

Nearly all large epidemiological studies rely on interpretation of basic anthropometric measures (weight, height and waist circumferences) as determinants of growth during childhood. In China today both under and over nutrition co-exist on a scale that is unprecedented. The rapid industrialisation in China has generated an equally rapid change in the food supply in both quantity and variety. Food intake obviously impacts on growth and this project will examine the relationship between food patterns, physical activity and growth over time in early childhood. These project goals will be realized by secondary data analysis of several large Chinese birth cohorts (50,000 – 100,000 subjects). It will be undertaken in collaboration with leading researchers in China. Applicants should have a particular interest and confidence in working with large datasets. This PhD will enable skill development in nutritional epidemiology. Opportunities to spend some periods of time in China exist within this project.

Alcohol: The forgotten component of energy intake

Supervisors: Prof Helen Truby
Email: helen.truby@monash.edu

Consumption of alcoholic beverages has a unique place in Australia, but with the rise in obesity, the contribution of alcohol to energy intake is under greater scrutiny. Alcohol contributes more energy per gram than protein and carbohydrate. As such alcohol attains public health importance solely as a discretionary energy source with low micro-nutrient value. Consumption of alcoholic beverages has a short term stimulatory effect on appetite and desire to eat. These physiological processes combined with the food supplied in social situations, which are often high fat snack foods, contribute to passive over consumption of energy per se. This project seeks to develop and test food (snack) solutions to reduce the energy availability and increase energy utilization of snacks by altering macronutrient composition. It will test their effectiveness when consumed with alcohol in controlled trials. The long term outcome will be increasing the evidence base for guidelines around which foods can be served with alcoholic beverages that optimize energy utilization and reduce the stimulatory effect on appetite.

Applications are now open for 2016 Faculty Bridging Postdoctoral Fellowships (Round 1)

These Fellowships provide competitive funding to support the career development of promising newly-qualified postdoctoral researchers at Monash University. They are intended to provide initial support while applications are prepared for externally funded fellowships such as NHMRC Training Fellowships, ARC Postdoctoral Fellowships, etc.
Applications should be made by the intended Fellow's mentor at Monash University. Mentors would normally be the Fellow's line manager and therefore the mentor must be a member of staff. Adjuncts are not eligible to supervise Monash staff.
The Faculty may award up to 4 Fellowships in each round. Competition is therefore at a high level and mentors should carefully consider candidates before nominating them.
